How to Protect Your Eyes From Smog & Dust While Wearing Contact Lenses This Season

As temperatures start to drop across Punjab, another seasonal reality sets in: smog. Every year, cities like Lahore see air quality drop sharply from late September through winter, and this affects more than just your breathing — it directly impacts your eyes too. If you wear contact lenses, smog season requires a bit of extra care to keep your eyes comfortable, healthy, and irritation-free.

Here's what you need to know about wearing contact lenses safely during smog and high-pollution days.

Why Smog Is Especially Tough on Contact Lens Wearers

Contact lenses sit directly on the surface of your eye, which means they're more exposed to airborne irritants than eyes protected by glasses or nothing at all. During smog season, the air carries a higher concentration of:

  • Fine dust particles (PM2.5 and PM10) that can settle on the lens surface
  • Smoke and vehicle emissions, which increase eye dryness and irritation
  • Allergens and pollen trapped closer to the ground due to smog

These particles can get trapped between the lens and your eye, causing redness, itching, a gritty feeling, or increased risk of infection if not managed properly.

Signs Smog Is Affecting Your Eyes

Watch out for these common symptoms during high-pollution days:

  • Redness or a burning sensation
  • Excessive watering or, conversely, dryness
  • A feeling like something is "stuck" under the lens
  • Blurred vision that improves after blinking or removing the lens
  • Increased sensitivity to light

If these symptoms persist even after removing your lenses, it's best to consult an eye specialist rather than continuing to wear lenses through it.

How to Protect Your Eyes During Smog Season

1. Prefer daily disposable lenses During smog season, daily lenses are a smart choice since you're using a fresh, clean lens every single day — reducing the buildup of trapped dust or pollutants that can accumulate on reusable lenses over time.

2. Keep lubricating eye drops with you Smog dries out the eyes faster than usual. Preservative-free lubricating drops (specifically formulated for contact lens wearers) help flush out irritants and keep your eyes comfortable throughout the day.

3. Avoid wearing lenses on very high AQI days On days when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is extremely high, consider switching to glasses instead. Your eyes will already be more exposed to irritation, and lenses can trap pollutants directly against the eye surface.

4. Don't rub your eyes It's tempting to rub itchy or irritated eyes, but this can push dust particles further under the lens and scratch the cornea. Instead, remove the lens carefully and rinse your eyes with a sterile saline solution if needed.

5. Clean your hands thoroughly before handling lenses Smog particles settle on your hands and surfaces too. Always wash your hands with soap before inserting or removing your lenses to avoid transferring dust directly onto them.

6. Replace your lens case and solution regularly If you wear monthly or reusable lenses, make sure your lens case is cleaned daily and your solution is replaced as recommended — smog season increases the risk of bacterial buildup if hygiene routines slip.

7. Consider wearing glasses indoors on smoggy days If you're working from home or spending the day indoors during peak smog hours, switching to glasses can give your eyes a break and reduce unnecessary exposure.

When to See an Eye Doctor

If you experience persistent redness, pain, discharge, or vision changes that don't improve after removing your lenses and resting your eyes, don't wait it out — see an eye specialist. Smog-related irritation can sometimes lead to secondary infections if untreated.
